multimedia learning environments – interdisciplinary and cross-regional cooperation

multimedia learning environments – interdisciplinary and cross-regional cooperation
mile develops learning programmes and modules for principles of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and media and communication science. The project partners cooperate on problems of suitable models of instruction as well as sharing of technical resources. The results of the exchange on subject-related didactics and of the evaluations are integrated into the further development of modules. All learning offers are included into the Education Portal of Thuringia and standardised in accordance with LOM (IEEE 484.12.1-2002). Offers are as follows:

  • In the field of media science (AMACE – TU Ilmenau, University of Trier) a web-based introduction into media and communication sciences is being developed, related to particular vocational fields. It covers the following subject areas: scientific presentation (4 modules), reception research (6 modules), communicator research (6 modules), product research (6 modules), and public relations (goal-based scenario: 6 modules).
  • In the field of communication sciences the learning unit "Digital Video" is being developed. This learning unit contains 18 modules on the subject areas video concepts, video editing, video distribution, and recording technology. The scope of the individual modules relates to the smallest meaningful learning unit. In terms of software ergonomics modules can be used independently.
  • In the field of principles of electrical engineering (TU Ilmenau, TU Dresden, University of Magdeburg) learning programmes and modules are being developed on the most relevant topics covering the basic principles of electrical engineering studied in the first four semesters. Programmes also contain detachable and indexable modules (videos, Java-applets, animations) on the subject areas "Bridging the Gap Course- Mathematics" (2 modules), "Basics, two-terminal elements, basic networks" (3 modules), Fourier series (24 applets, 14 videos), Laplace transformation (7 applets), Fourier transformation (10 applets), transformer, three-phase-current system, transient analysis, induction analysis, frequency-selective circuits, electrostatics (some experiments as streaming videos).

  • The working group of the research institute OFFIS Oldenburg (an-institut) is developing an intelligent problem-solving environment (IPSE) that supports students in solving problems from a web-based task collection on the basics of electrical engineering. The objective is to develop a knowledge-based learning environment, which supports the learner throughout the process of solving selected basic problems of general electrical engineering. For this purpose a working environment is required that enables the user, for instance, to edit circuits and equations. However, users should not be constrained to typical solutions, but should be as free as possible in finding solutions. The system is able to analyse even incomplete solution proposals and give appropriate help. The necessary factual knowledge can be acquired from the web-based learning modules of the partner universities.
  • The web-based database containing tasks and documents of basic electric engineering is featuring a stock of 250 tasks with help- and checking-functions as well as 150 other documents (videos, animations, applets, MATHCAD worksheets, transparencies, examinations, placement instructions).
  • In the area of engineering mechanics specific problems of vibration technology are didactically prepared and explained, featuring texts, images, video clips, animations and audio clips. All contents are structured into sections or modules showing the way from the real technical systems to the mechanical models and finally to mathematical solutions. 6 modules, about 20 video clips and 5 applets are being created.
