PortaLingua
Use of curricular modules in the domain of language studies and communication science – multimedia teaching and learning resources for face-to-face teaching, self-study and further education
PortaLingua is a joint university project merging multimedia teaching and learning resources for the domain of languages and communication sciences. The common Internet portal www.portalingua.uni-essen.de serves as a stepping stone to the manifold – topically and functionally structured – multimedial learning offers and online materials. Offers are available freely over the Internet to all students and persons with a keen interest in language studies.
In Essen the linguistics server LINSE provides, for instance, studies-related materials like reviews written by students, bibliographies and selected seminar assignments, an annotated link-database, product reviews, and essays on philological topics. The multimedial L;nkolon-learning modules on semantics, morphology, syntax, grammar, socio-linguistics, diachronic language studies, and semiotics aim at students of basic linguistics, but can also be worked on self-directedly without further introduction. In Essen multimedia teaching and learning materials were developed for use in the teaching of basic linguistics and language didactics.
The learning environment BabelOn/LiOn, developed in Bielefeld, offers learning modules for phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and corpus linguistics in the form of a hypertext system, that additionally features media elements, interactive texts, navigational help functions, and communication tools. Modules on clinical linguistics, psycho-linguistics/language processing, the learning module on text linguistics developed in Halle, and a module on communication training developed in Erfurt complement these offers. With the interactive learning system ProGr@mm the Institut für deutsche Sprache provides a basic course on the grammar of the German language that is specially tailored to university teaching: modular grammatical units that were (partly multimedially) prepared using new media and technologies are hypertextually linked together. The "Kommunikationswissenschaftliches Lern-Online-System" (Online learning system for communication science) KOLOSS gives a basic introduction to relevant theories and knowledge areas of communication science. As regards content, the system is based on author-oriented knowledge segments with topical sub-chapters.
Technical guidelines and field reports on the use of computer-based tele-conferences facilitating group learning are provided by the project KITT – "Kleingruppenlernen in Tutorengestützten Telekonferenzen" (Learning in small groups using tutored tele-conferencing). GAIS, the "GesprächsAnalytischesInformationsSystem" (information system for the analysis of conversations) developed by the Institut für deutsche Sprache provides information and facilities for the analysis of conversations and on results and methods of rhetorical analysis of verbal interaction corpora. Teaching and learning modules on conversation research, on the linguistic analysis of media communication and on applied linguistics developed at the University of Chemnitz complement this offer. The University of Oldenburg developed a multimedial, interactive learning programme for conflict management training that brings about improved communication strategies and aims at students in teacher training.
All learning offers of the PortaLingua project partners have been internally and externally used in basic teaching and have been evaluated. Many modules contain complex, interactive tasks that support autonomous, problem-oriented learning based on informative feedback and boost motivation. Task types were developed by learning psychologists of the TU Dresden whose expert knowledge went into the creation of tasks by all project partners.
