e-stat

Development of an Internet-based, interactive, multimedia, efficient teaching and learning environment for applied statistics

e-stat develops an Internet-based, interactive, multimedia teaching and learning environment for applied statistics called EMILeA-stat. Already before the project application was submitted business partners and associated partners could be won who considerably contribute to sustainability. The Springer-Verlag (Springer Publishing Group) publishes an accompanying media series entitled "EMILeA-stat – Neue Medien in der angewandten Statistik" (EMILeA-stat – New Media in Applied Statistics). The SPSS GmbH Software and the company MD*Tech (Method and Data Technologies) will provide web-based versions of SPSS-software and the interactive statistics software XploRe free of charge. Since the start of the project further partners have signed cooperation agreements and contributed to statistical contents and evaluations.

Applied quantitative methods – especially in the field of statistics – are an essential part of school education, higher education (e.g., economics, psychology, medicine), and a broad spectrum of in-service training arrangements. It is, therefore, central to the concept of the EMILeA-stat teaching and learning environment to provide a system that facilitates education, professional training and information for these different target groups.

Based on a modular concept, offers are not confined to providing courses and learning units in the traditional educational realms of statistics, but are also expanded to other scenarios, like an insurance game, a production scenario, business games, and a virtual business, thus providing rich and realistic examples of applied statistical methods. As the system can be accessed free of charge (for non-commercial use), it is a forum comfortably, multimedially, and interactively providing information for anyone interested in statistics.

Existing contents, that is texts, graphics, static images, interactive JAVA-applets, and Flash animations, can be employed in teaching to various degrees complementing face-to-face teaching or facilitating Internet-based study. Moreover, teachers can flexibly combine existing contents, if necessary their own units, into new, target group oriented courses.

Whenever it seems sensible, contents are offered on three levels of abstraction (popular scientific presentation: mathematical formalisms are largely left out; basics of applied statistics, e.g., for students of statistics as a minor subject or pupils; advanced contents for different user groups).

In addition, concepts account for motivation, transitions, tasks, or examples by taking on relevant issues and subject-related problems. Users of EMILeA-stat can switch between these "perspectives on knowledge" and levels of abstraction are possible at any time.
